A striking, antique lap sized quilt which makes a beautiful display
quilt over banisters, side table, trunk or spare bed etc. Too delicate
for everyday use, but ideal for show!Age - Circa early late 1800's - early 1900's. Where from - New York State. Hand Sewn - Yes, the patchwork strips were hand sewn. Machine Sewn - Yes, the blocks were machine set. Hand Hemmed - Yes. Materials Used - Mainly silk fabrics, some cotton and velvet patches. Batting - The patchwork strips were sewn onto foundation squares
of cotton prints which you can see where the frayed patches have
exposed them. This helps to distract from the missing patches. You can
see this for example, in the 8th photo where there is a blue cotton
left showing after the silk strip had frayed away, and in the 11th
photo you can see a striped black and white cotton showing. Backing Material - A nice gentle shade of brown cloth. Measurements - Approximately 52.5 inches by 37.5 inches. Fraying - Yes, there are some very delicate silks which are frayed, approximately three dozen frayed patches. Holes - Where there is the above mentioned fraying. Holes all the way through - No. Stains - Some light age fold marks on the backing, and a couple of light marks on the front. Washed - No, this would cause further disintigration of fabrics,
as would dry cleaning. The quilt appears to have been well looked
after, and doesn't have any offensive odours. Notes - Postage on this quilt will be £4.50
