The classic and hard to acquire, red and white colour combination in
the Irish Chain pattern. Vintage red and white quilts are one of the most
sought after on both sides of the Atlantic! This hand sewn quilt is a good size for
a single bed or use as a 'topper' on a double bed. Lovely sunflower
motifs in the hand quilting and comfy 'soft cottons'.Age - Red and white quilts can be difficult to date, the
previous owner had owned this quilt for 30 years and had bought it in
the Northeast - she said it was late 1800's. Where from - North Carolina. Hand Sewn - Yes, neat tiny hand sewing. Hand Quilted - Yes, lovely hand quilting with sunflower shapes in the large white quilt blocks. Machine Sewn - The larger white blocks have been machine set. Hand Hemmed - Yes. Materials Used - Red and off white cottons, which have a soft, cosy feel. Batting - Thin to medium thickness, cotton batting, a lightweight quilt. Backing Material - The same off white soft cotton as on the front. Measurements - Approximately 76 inches by 66 inches. Fraying - No. Holes - There is one tiny hole on the back, near the hem, size of a pea. Holes all the way through - No. Stains - There are areas of age browning and uneven fading of
the reds. The age browning is difficult to pick up in the photos - one
of the central white sunflower blocks is fairly cream coloured, this is
shown in photo 6th along - you can just about make out the difference
in shade between the central white block and the more white blocks
surrounding it. Also age browning on hem ends - you can see this in
photos where quilt is crumpled, the difference in shades can be seen,
also compare the red patches, some have faded. Washed - Yes. Notes - A beautiful antique quilt in overall good condition, but not pristine reds and whites, so please study photos carefully.
