A primitive, large size quilt, which would
fit a double or kingsize bed. Lovely feedsack colourful cottons in the
patchwork, and the cream cotton backing still has the sugar
manufacturers logo still visible. In
'as found condition' - this quilt was stored away for many
years and needs finishing off. It has been pieced together, backing
added and hemmed, but there are some issues with bunched up batting and
unfinished quilting. Ideal project for someone who enjoys quilting. A
'she used what she had quilt' with every little scrap out of her sewing
bag put to good use.Age - circa 1940's Where from - Michigan. Machine Sewn - Yes. Hand Quilted - A small amount of very basic quilting has been started. Machine Hemmed - Yes. Materials Used - Assorted feedsack cottons with lots of dots, florals, stripes, leaf print and a novelty Dutch print. Batting
- This appears to be a mixture of what might be flannel sheeting or a
thin blanket, plus there are three bunched up areas which might be
another type of batting as something has formed large soft balls, but
these need to be taken out by undoing some of the patchwork seams to
investigate what is inside! It would appear that the quilt maker used
several separate pieces of cloth for batting and as the quilt was never
finished, these have moved about inside the layers. As the quilt is
made up from fairly sturdy cottons, the batting could even be removed
to make a lighter quilt. Backing Material - Sugar sack feedsack cottons. Measurements - Approximately 90 inches by 80 inches. Fraying - Some seams in the patchwork pieces have been crudely
stitched together, may have been on the original feedsacks? You can see
the machine hole seams from the feedsacks. Holes - A very small hole on backing, probably from original feedsack. Holes all the way through - No. Stains - There are some stains on the front and back, please see photos. Washed - No, as it would probably be better to finish the quilt off first. Notes - Photos show the quilt on a kingsize bed.
