A striking Hawaiian style applique quilt, good strong condition and in a classic colour combination, hard to acquire. Age - Circa 1930's. Where from - Ohio. Hand Sewn - The appliqued shapes have been neatly hand sewn. Hand Quilted - Yes. Hand and machine hemmed. Materials Used - An off white cotton and a gold tone of yellow.
There are two tones of yellow on the binding, one of the shorter hem
lengths has a paler yellow binding. Batting - Thin thickness, cotton batting. Backing Material - The same off white cotton as the front of the quilt. Measurements - Approximately 76.5 inches by 74.5 inches. Fraying - No. Holes - No. Stains - There are a few stains on the backing, shown in the
photos with the tape measure. The lighter coloured hem has slight
fabric bleed into the off white cotton, you can see this in photo
number 11. Washed - Yes. Notes - Missionaries from New England arrived in Hawaii in the
early 1800's, and shared their sewing skills with the local women.
The Hawaiian's eventually developed their own quilting skills, taking
inspiration from nature and creating quilts with appliques of Hawaiian
plant varieties such as the hibiscus, lilies, ferns, fruits and
turtles.
